This podcast offers insights into what some two-spirit folks who are transitioning may go through when their identity does not only intersect with being two-spirit, but by being Indigenous, having trauma/inter-generational trauma, and healing from a cultural genocide and ongoing colonization. It begins by discussing the sacred role of two-spirit people in Indigenous communities pre-contact and how during colonial processes these positions were denigrated and two-spirit people were stripped of having any dignity, which led to discrimination in society and within Nations. It further discusses the importance of using pronouns and the compassion we also need to have for residential school survivors who were forced through physical punishment to adopt gender beliefs. Lastly, it talks about allyship and what it means and entails for people to be an ally to 2SLGBTQ+ communities and how it cannot be performative.
